CAA ‘violates’ Indian Constitution, international human rights law: Amnesty

The new citizenship law passed by Parliament in December 2019 offers citizenship to non-Muslim persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan

Current Affairs:Reprieve International has told the US legislators that the as of late established Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) remains in “clear infringement” of the Constitution of India and global human rights law and “legitimizes segregation” based on religion.

The new citizenship law passed by Parliament in December 2019 offers citizenship to non-Muslim abused strict minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The Indian government has been underscoring that the new law won’t deny any citizenship rights, yet has been brought to secure the abused minorities of neighboring nations and give them citizenship.

Reprieve International Asia Pacific Advocacy Manager Francisco Bencosme offered the comments during a declaration before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations and House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee.

The Indian Parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Act, which legitimizes segregation based on religion and stands in away from of the constitution of India and universal human rights law, Bencosme said.

India has attested that the enactment on CAA was authorized after the fair treatment.
