Coal scam: SC gives Centre time to name special public prosecutor

A bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justice Deepak Gupta was considering the plea of senior advocate R S Cheema, who wanted to be relieved as the prosecutor in money laundering cases

Current Affairs:The Supreme Court on Friday gave the Center time till February 10 to propose names of attorneys for delegating an uncommon open examiner to lead preliminaries for the Enforcement Directorate in tax evasion cases identified with the coal square trick.

A seat including Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justice Deepak Gupta was thinking about the request of senior promoter R S Cheema, who needed to be soothed as the examiner in illegal tax avoidance cases.

The top court delegated Cheema Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) in coal square trick cases in 2014.

The seat didn’t appear to be in concurrence with the proposal of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, showing up for the Center, that previous Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh be designated the exceptional investigator to direct preliminary in ED cases relating to coal trick cases.

“We need a preliminary court legal advisor who has been leading preliminaries,” the seat stated, including that “the other legal counselor” recommended by Cheema appeared to be increasingly suitable. Sources revealed to PTI that Cheema has recommended the name of legal counselor Satish Tamta for the activity.

“The other name is by all accounts increasingly fitting,” the seat said and gave the Center time till February 10 to recommend names for this reason.
