Bhopal gas tragedy: Organisations seek Madhya Pradesh govt help for victims

There is absolutely no justification for continuing to delay the granting of additional compensation to the gas victims, the organisations said

Current Affairs : Associations working for the reason for overcomers of the 1984 Bhopal Gas misfortune on Sunday requested earnest assistance for the people in question, particularly widows, from the Madhya Pradesh government taking into account the Covid-19 emergency.

In a letter routed to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, these associations guaranteed the state of around 5,000 bereft casualties has gotten despicable, as they have been denied of the month to month annuity (of Rs 1,000) since December 2019.

The letter has been composed together by Bhopal Gas Peedith Mahila Udyog Sanghathan (BGPMUS) convener Hamida Bi and ND Jayaprakash, co-convener of the Bhopal Gas Peedith Sangharsh Sahayog Samiti (BGPSSS).

Jayaprakash said BGPSSS was an umbrella group of 30 NGOs working for the gas casualties.

“Gas casualties are being compelled to live in awful conditions when a large number of crores of rupees are still because of them by the method of pay,” expressed the letter, duplicates of which have been appropriated to media people.

“By the Government of India’s own accommodation in the healing petitions, right now pending under the steady gaze of the Supreme Court, it has looked for Rs 7,728 crores (which is a gross underestimation) as extra remuneration from Union Carbide Corporation and its current proprietors, the Dow Chemical Company,” it said.

There is positively no defense for proceeding to postpone the allowing of extra pay to the gas casualties, the associations said.

“It might be reviewed that Rs 200 was paid as an interval alleviation for every individual/every month to 500,000 inhabitants of 36 gas-influenced wards of Bhopal during 1990-1996 by the Central government because of postponement in the installment of remuneration.

The associations have requested a break alleviation of Rs 3,000 for each casualty for every month and of Rs 5,000 to each widow or vagrant every month until payment of extra pay.
