Unauthorised groundwater extraction for commercial use is criminal: NGT

There is no absolute right to extract groundwater for commercial purpose and doing so without authorisation is a criminal offence, the NGT said

Current Affairs : There is no outright option to extricate groundwater for business reason and doing as such without authorisation is a criminal offense, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) said on Friday.

The green board said that it is the obligation of the state contamination control sheets to stop business extraction of groundwater by coercive methods and recoup remuneration from violators.

The NGT perception came while hearing a supplication documented by Haryana-occupant Raj Kumar Singal charging illicit extraction of groundwater and release of contaminated water into channel by a mechanical unit in Panipat.

“Ground water extraction must be managed having respect to security of level of groundwater with the goal that water bodies and e-stream of waterways are not influenced,” a seat headed by NGT Chairperson Justice A K Goel said.

“Effect of such extraction on nature is to be considered. There is no outright option to extricate groundwater for business reason,” the NGT said.

The council said that on the off chance that anybody is found separating groundwater, it is as such a criminal offense under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

It noticed that the mechanical unit in Panipat has been seen as separating groundwater in the zone and coordinated the Haryana State Pollution Control Board to make a move against it.
