Current Affairs:The Rs 4,000-crore Rohtang Tunnel, the world’s longest motorable street at an elevation of more than 3,000 meters, is prepared for opening one month from now following the consummation of common works that started 10 years prior.
The passage will be opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by mid-September, Satish Paretkar, Director of Hydro and Underground specialty unit at Afcons told PTI.
A joint endeavor of Shapoorji Pallonji Group-run Afcons and Strabag of Austria won the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) delicate for Rs 1,458 crore from Border Road Organization in 2009.
The expense of the task has crossed Rs 2,500 crore now, he said. The common works began in 2009 and was to be finished inside 6.5 years.
Paretkar said the specific date of opening of the passage is yet to be settled.
The 9.02 kilometers-long Atal Tunnel, named after previous Prime priest Atal Bihari Vajpayee, goes under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal extend on the Leh-Manali roadway at a height of 3,060 meters at the least and 3,078 meters at the pinnacle.
