Mukherjee was presented the most elevated non military personnel grant by his successor Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday.
“Much thanks to you for investigating every possibility towards making India increasingly created … It was a respect to observe you getting the Bharat Ratna, a fitting acknowledgment of everything that you have accomplished for the country,” Modi tweeted.
Acclaimed Assamese artist Bhupen Hazarika and RSS pioneer Nanaji Deshmukh were given the honor after death.
